Milestones

A Legacy Unfolding

Key moments in the history of Lock Haven soccer and the Olde Boys Soccer Club.

1938

Men's Soccer Program Founded

Lock Haven State Teachers College fields its first men's soccer team under head coach Blake Hammond, beginning a program that would grow into one of the most decorated in collegiate soccer history. Hammond went 13–13–2 over four seasons before the program paused during World War II.

1967

Karl Herrmann Named Head Coach

Karl Herrmann takes over as head coach, compiling a 65–35–14 record over nine seasons. His teams earned PSAC titles and made consistent NCAA postseason appearances — including Eastern Regional and Division III playoff runs — laying the tactical and cultural foundation for the championship dynasty that followed.

1975

Herrmann Launches Youth Soccer in Clinton County

Coach Herrmann begins organizing informal Sunday afternoon pickup games on the Lock Haven State College field for local children, including his own son. These casual sessions plant the seed for organized youth soccer in the region, eventually leading to the formation of the West Branch Soccer Club and the establishment of AYSO Region 445 in Lock Haven. Herrmann is now recognized as the founding father of Clinton County youth soccer.

1976

Mike Parker Takes the Helm — A Dynasty Begins

Mike Parker becomes head coach and transforms Lock Haven into a national powerhouse. In eight seasons he compiled the highest winning percentage in program history (.791), made six NCAA Tournament appearances, and delivered three national championships — Division III titles in 1977 and 1978, followed by a perfect 21-0-0 Division II crown in 1980. Parker was inducted into the LHU Hall of Fame in 2020 and went on to a 494–191–33 career record across LHU and UNC-Greensboro.

1977

NCAA Division III Championship — First National Title

The Lock Haven Bald Eagles capture their first-ever NCAA national championship, winning the Division III soccer tournament. It marks the beginning of an unprecedented dynasty that would see the program claim three national titles in four years.

1978

Back-to-Back — Second NCAA Division III Title

Lock Haven defends its national championship, winning a second consecutive NCAA Division III soccer title and cementing the program's reputation as one of the premier college soccer programs in the country.

1980

NCAA Division II National Championship — 21-0-0

Now competing at the Division II level, the Lock Haven Bald Eagles complete a perfect 21-0-0 season, defeating Florida International University 1-0 in overtime in Miami to claim the NCAA Division II National Championship. Tim Gagan and Trevor Adair earn All-American honors. Three national titles in four years — a dynasty by any measure.

1984

Lenny Long Named Head Coach

Lenny Long takes over and sustains one of the most dominant stretches in program history. Over 13 seasons he compiled a 173–74–71 record with a 65–9–3 PSAC mark, won the conference championship seven times, and went undefeated in PSAC play eight times. Long coached 8 All-Americans, 38 All-Region players, and 84 All-PSAC selections. Named PSAC Coach of the Year in 1996 and inducted into the LHU Hall of Fame, Class of 2024.

1984

West Branch Soccer Club Founded

The seeds Coach Herrmann planted in 1975 bear fruit when the West Branch Soccer Club is formally established on February 9, 1984 in Room 108 of Lock Haven Senior High. WBSC affiliates with AYSO and establishes Region 445, bringing organized youth soccer to Clinton County. Former Herrmann player Tom Ellis serves as the club's first vice president.

1992

Matt Ford Completes Historic Run

After what witnesses described as the longest run down the sideline in program history, Matt Ford '95 finally crosses the finish line. The exact start date remains disputed. The run is considered complete.

1997

Rob Eaton Named Head Coach

LHU alum Rob Eaton ('88) succeeds Lenny Long, becoming the program's fifth head coach. A former standout Bald Eagle, Eaton hit the ground running — winning the PSAC regular-season title in his first season and earning PSAC Coach of the Year. He compiled a 53–32–6 record over five seasons with PSAC regular-season championships in 1997 and multiple tournament final appearances.

2000

Olde Boys Soccer Club Established

Lock Haven soccer alumni formally organize the Olde Boys Soccer Club to maintain connections between generations of players and provide ongoing support to the university's soccer programs.

2002

Doug Moore Becomes Head Coach

Doug Moore is appointed head men's soccer coach, beginning a 14-year tenure that would become one of the longest in program history. Moore rebuilt the program's winning culture in the Division II era, amassing over 130 victories, seven seasons above .500, one PSAC championship, and two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. He guided more than 30 players to All-Conference honors before departing after the 2015 season.

2016

Patrick Long Named Head Coach

Patrick Long ('08), a two-time All-PSAC First Team player and former team captain, returns to his alma mater as the program's seventh head coach. Long brought six seasons of Division I experience as an assistant at Bucknell, where he helped guide two Patriot League titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2021 he led Lock Haven to its best season in over a decade — a 13–4–2 record, PSAC East Regular Season title, and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 — earning PSAC Coach of the Year honors.

2020

Lock Haven Loses Coach Karl Herrmann

Karl Herrmann passes away on September 20, 2020 at the age of 81. In his honor, the LHU Foundation Board of Directors establishes the endowed Karl Herrmann Foundation Scholarship. The Olde Boys Soccer Club rallies to support the fund, setting an initial goal of $14,000 — a figure that would be exceeded through the generosity of alumni from every era of the program.
